Kattai-k-Koothu – Kattaikkuttu Sangam – Kattaikuttu, also known as Terukuttu (street theater), is the theatre of the rural people in the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, India. Using song, music, dance, make-up and costumes, drama and ritual, the all-night performances are powerful, high-energy, intense events that temporarily recreate the mythical world of kings, gods and sages on earth. It can trigger emotional responses in spectators and performers causing some of them to fall into trance-like states at particularly dramatic moments in the story. The Kattaikkuttu Sangam is a “performing arts organisation that uses the integration of liberal education and the performing arts to promote and contemporize Kattaikkuttu” to ensure sustainable careers for its professional performers.
