Rasikas Welcome

A Tribute to Smt.Jayalakshmi Santhanam

A Tribute to one of the Most Precious Rasika and Musician at Ragasudha by Smt.Varalakshmi Anandkumar.

Vidhushi Jayalakshmi Santhanam who passed away yesterday was an unsung hero(ine) of Carnatic music. Her music was steeped in weighty classicism. But long time listeners at Ragasudha will remember her as a 100 % attendee at all concerts. Be it a youngster or a veteran, Mami, clothed in  her traditional checked saris, complete with gold jewellery and bright sindoor would add lustre to the hall as a one with deep nyanam and a ‘pazhuttha sumangali’. She had an unofficial seat for herself right in front of the artiste. It was also normal to see her take a catnap during a concert too!!
When she moved away from Mylapore, het presence at the hall was missed but we often enquired after her. Though it has been 2 years since she came for concerts, the fact that she was somewhere in T.Nagar was taken for granted. Now with the news that Mami is no more comes the awareness that Carnatic Music has lost one of its torchbearers, the audience, a die hard rasika, and the world, one of the most spirited human beings.  May she be always in our memory and bless us with her unwavering love for Music!
